Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Organizing Committee I regret to inform you that, with the support of the JSGE Board of Directors, we have decided to cancel the JSGE 2020 Annual Meeting in Kyoto. The decision was made based on the rapidly increasing number of COVID-19 cases worldwide, and the constantly changing situation in Japan. The Committee and the Board of Directors considered many alternatives, including postponement or webcasting. However, in order to prevent the further expansion of SARS-CoV-2 and protect the members of the Society, we have decided to cancel the 5th Annual Meeting.
Annual meetings are a place for scientific presentations, networking and the exchange of new research ideas. This is an indispensable opportunity to advance the level of genome editing research in Japan. Yet, as there are no certainties as to when the current situation will resolve, it is difficult to secure future schedules and venues. The decision to cancel was made to protect the health and safety of participants, and contribute to global efforts to prevent SARS-CoV-2 from further spreading.
We apologize to all the Society members who have been looking forward to the meeting and the valuable support of company sponsors for this sudden cancellation. We hope that you can understand our difficult decision. All registration fees and sponsor fees that have already been paid will be refunded.
On a positive note, the 6th Annual Meeting is still scheduled to be held in Kyushu in 2021. In addition, the 2020 General Assembly meeting will be coordinated to be held in some form. I sincerely hope that COVID-19 will resolve as soon as possible and look forward to a successful academic meeting at Kyushu in 2021.
March 27th, 2020
Akitsu Hotta
President, JSGE 2020 Annual Meeting
